The Port and the Great Michael

The village ( New Haven by contrast to the old haven of Blackness to the West) had a thriving port at one time. The flagship of the Scottish navy, the Great Michael, was built and launched in Newhaven between 1507 and 1511 at the behest of James IV, but its life was short and it never saw significant action. James IV’s death two years later at Flodden saw the end of serious support for a Scottish navy and the Great Michael was sold to France.
